Gettysburg Campaign: July 1st, 1863. J.E.B. Stuart before the US Cavalry Barracks at Carlisle, PA. It had to be burned and the town shelled. No doubt fond memories flooded back to many of Stuart’s officers as they readied their troopers and gazed at the old barracks where they once lived; memories of classroom antics and drill fields, kind civilian hospitality to young men far from their homes in the south, dear classmates now enemies.
